CAUSES OF NMI

It is very unlikely that any of the following factors by itself be regarded as a cause of delayed development or immaturity of the nervous system. Usually it is a combination of developmental and environmental factors that lead to the persistence of primitive reflexes in the child or adult.

Below is an example of indicators of NMI:

Pregnancy

  • alcohol abuse and / or narcotics (drugs)
  • insufficient development of the placenta
  • smoking
  • infection
  • toxoplasmosis
  • excessive vomiting during pregnancy
  • risk of miscarriage
  • severe viral infection within the first 12 weeks of, or the 26th-30th Week
  • high blood pressure
  • diabetes

Delivery

  • fetus is exposed to stress (stress transmitted from the mother)
  • Clamp or vacuum delivery
  • premature birth (2 weeks before and more)
  • delayed delivery  (greater than 10 days from due date)
  • prolonged or fast delivery
  • cord wrapped around neck
  • placenta previa
  • Caesarean section

Newborn disorders

  • deformation of the skull
  • bruises on the head and body
  • long-lasting jaundice
  • problems with feeding during the first 6-months
  • low birth weight (less than 2.5 kg)
  • need for resuscitation
  • need for placement in the incubator

Childhood

  • Late walker  (after 15 months
  • Early walker (earlier than 10 months)
  • Late talker  (speaking 2-3  utterances after 18 months.)
  • wetting above the age of 5 years
  • severe allergic reactions
  • recurrent ENT infections
  • illness accompanied by high fever, delirium and convulsions in the first 18 months of
  • difficulty learning to dress
  • difficulty learning right from left
  • difficulty learning how to catch a ball
  • adverse reaction to any
  • sucking thumb later than the fifth year of life
